DOBERMAN OF THE MONTH

We picked up Zeus May 18th 2004, I remember the day. It was 3 days after we lost our husky, Kodiak, from eating paintballs. He came to us a skinny, not well socialized dog. We were told he was very dog aggressive. We had just planned on fostering him, as our hearts were still too broken to consider loving another dog.

As days turned into weeks and Zeus started playing with our dogs it seemed to us that Zeus had found his new home. We still had issues to work out but we were getting there. And honestly, who else was going to adopt an albino dog that had skin problems, photophobia, and ears someone tried to crop themselves (to bad they did it backwards)

So now Zeus is an official member of the Hazen household. He gained the weight he needed and learned the cats were not sent here to take over the house. He turned in to my cuddle buddy and still, to this day hardly leaves my side.

Eight months after Zeus came to live with us our lives all changed. It seemed like any other night as I went to bed about 10 o’clock. Stephen was still up getting laundry done so he would have a certain shirt to wear to work the next day. He went to bed about midnight and had left the dryer going, something we have always done. About 3 AM I started dreaming that a dog was jumping on me barking, as I slowly awakened. At first I thought my throat hurt and yelled at Zeus and Andre to shut up. As I became fully awake I realized that Zeus and Andre were jumping on the bed whining and my bedroom was full of smoke. We both jumped out of bed coughing and ran to the front door dragging the dogs with us.

We put the dogs in the car and tried to go back in to rescue the cats and birds but the house was just too full of smoke and we had to leave. Stephen had managed to grab our cell phone and I called 911. The fire Department came and found the dryer on fire and the flames starting to spread. After the fire was out the fire department started the huge task of bringing out all the animals. First came Sheba, our foster Doberman. They tried dragging her crate out with her in it until a friend of ours and a firefighter opened her crate and carried her out, telling them she was friendly. Then to my utter surprise they brought out 2 very upset parrots. I could not believe they made it. Then the rats and guinea pig came out covered in soot but fine. They found 5 out of the 7 cats in the house. It took us 2 days to find the other 2 cats.

We had a lot of fire damage in the bathroom where it started but the rest of the house just had smoke damage. All the animals but for some fish made it out, some had coughs that lasted a few weeks but other than that everyone else was ok.

When we went back in the next day you could see where the fire was starting to spread out of the dryer. With out Zeus and Andre I don't think we would have awakened in time. We owe them our lives and the lives of everyone in the house. Ironically, both dogs we had rescued and they ended up rescuing us and for that I can never thank them enough.

It took a month and a half before we were able to live in the house, but we were all alive and still together thanks to Zeus and Andre.

Dear Dogs,

Just to have some clarity:

1) The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

2) The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster  than you can run.

3) I cannot buy anything bigger than a king-sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

4) For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, to try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine attendance is not mandatory.

5) The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and

Like to Complain About My Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture.)

3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs are better than kids because they: eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if  they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Several weeks ago we had a giant hail storm and our roof was pretty well done in so we found this guy who specializes in roofing, siding, etc. and he agreed to do the job if we could handle the dogs!

After completing the job today, he presented me with a check for $200.00 to be donated to DRON! Here is a picture of Don and the dogs!

He has no yard so we are out as far as adoption is concerned but we have a perennial "drop by for a beer and pet the dogs" guy. Oh, by the way, he did a great job on the roof!

The check will be mailed to Alice and she will put it to good use. My dogs are super, high-pressure sales people! I find that most Doberman are!

Aloha, Jim Tannehill
