Shelby
www.doberescue-ne.org From Shelby’s foster mom: When Shelby first
arrived, we weren’t so sure about her. We had seen her be very
aggressive with other dogs. Feeling that she deserved a chance to redeem
herself we took her home. We worked at first with her alone and
separated from our older dog (Foxhound).
Shelby loved to please us she wanted to do everything right, she was
rewarded with treats and encouraged to sit, stay, lay down, heel, etc.
She sleeps in her kennel, but would LOVE to sleep with someone on their
bed with them. She is house trained and she is a great home protector,
and great with human visitors.
We introduced her to our 12 year old dog (who could really care less
about her), she was very scared and took a couple of days to warm up.
Every once in a while she would need to be reminded to be nice. She
would gather herself and realize she was in a safe situation and be
friendly again.
Shelby,
we think, was constantly at the mercy of other dogs while she was on a
chain in someone’s yard. She has a few scars on her face to help tell
her story. She is however a VERY BEAUTIFUL Doberman. She has a nice coat
and she will prance when she walks.
Shelby is good at jumping but doesn’t jump on you or at you. She is very
fast and would love a dog companion who would be safe to play with her.
She LOVES to play. She is learning to play. She has happy energy that is
infectious. Shelby likes to chew on bones from the butcher. She was
rather thin when she arrived with us, but has since filled out. She eats
Science Diet Adult… but has no food issues that we know of. We free feed
her, so she is able to eat as much and when she wants through out the
day.
We go for walks, and Shelby has learned to heel. She forgets sometimes
and would like to drag you, but when reminded she promptly stays by your
side with out pulling. She does become scared of other dogs on walks, so
we usually walk in areas where most dogs are not around (cemetery,
people park, etc). We are working with her to be more comfortable around
other strange dogs, but we think this may be a constant challenge for
her. We just love her, she comes when she is called, and she is ready
for what ever you would like to do with her.
She
takes baths great, rides in the car great when she is alone, but when
she is with another dog she needs a little practice as she has some
personal space issues. Soon, however, driving down the road they will be
curled up next to each other. Shelby would be great in a single dog
home, or great with a non dominant dog home. With other dogs she will
require the right introduction and she will need help to adjust. What
ever home she is placed in her Humans will have to be the dominant
figures of the family. She will not do well in an environment with out
rules and consequences. Shelby does take thyroid medication, which is
common in Dobermans. She also uses a food additive to help her skin and
coat look fabulous. Shelby doesn’t like being in an out door kennel, but
would LOVE a yard to run around in to play. She likes to curl up with
you on the couch and just snuggle, she loves her tummy to be rubbed, and
her nose scratched as well. As you can see from the photo below that she
is a snuggler, she loves to be under the red pillow, and Ozzie loves to
be on top of it. She still warns him occasionally not to get to close
but is becoming more comfortable every day. We have yet to expose Shelby
to cats, at this point she shouldn’t be around them without extra work.
